Gallery Retour De Voyage : Program 2017

Gallery retouR de Voyage will be hosting six months of exhibitions, conferences and meetings in 2017 focusing on latest developments in the art scene of this rapidly-emerging nation.

The Gallery retouR De Voyage approaches the opening of the country from the perspective of its abundant artistic creation which we firmly believe deserves a wider audience !

After more than 50 years of dictatorship and economic stagnation, Myanmar has now opened its doors to the outside world, attracting the attention of collectors and art professionals, curious to see for themselves this exciting new art scene. With the lifting of censorship in 2012, artists are thriving, finally free to express themselves and to share their work …

Retour De Voyage, now present in Myanmar for eight years, witnesses this opening … Through our encounters over the years, we have woven a web of friendships with the artistic world of Yangon, including painters, sculptors, art galleries and photographers... Our last journey in November 2016 allowed us to finalize the program for 2017 which we are proud to present and share with you. We are fortunate indeed that three of Myanmar’s most talented contemporary artists have accepted our invitation to travel to France to attend the openings of the various exhibitions, giving a rare opportunity to meet and get to know artists from this still-isolated country.

- Introduction to current events in Myanmar with the powerful and poignant photos of Reporter Soe Zeya Tun, recipient of the «Hans Silvester Award», last March, at the Yangon Photo Festival. There will also be a projection of photos-stories published by Christophe Lovigny and produced by the French Institute of Myanmar Inauguration on March 17th, in the presence of Soe Zeya Tun.

- Exhibition, meeting and exchanges with one of Myanmar’s most famous, internationally recognized artists: Htein Lin, whose works can be seen in museums in Asia and in Europe. Inauguration on April 10th, with Htein Lin and Gill Pattison of River Gallery, a ten-year talented veteran of the Myanmar art scene.

- Later in the year we focus on Myanmar’s most exciting emerging artists, selected in association with River Gallery and represented by Than Kyaw Htay, a painter already exhibited in 2015 by retouR De Voyage. Inauguration of the group show on June 2nd, in the presence of Than Kyaw Htay.

- Finally in July, we will feature another of Myanmar’s most acclaimed artists: Khin Zaw Latt. The exhibition offers a chance to meet the artist and to discover his artworks, which have been acquired by collectors all around the world. Inauguration on July 7th, in the presence of Khin Zaw Latt and his family.

Through-out this period, the presence of the Myanmar artists and their works will give many opportunities for our European artists and journalists to come together and join in discussions, and share their knowledge and experience of the artistic creations from this beguiling country. Program of conferences to be confirmed (Micheline Pelletier Decaux, Sylvie Brieu, Christophe Lovigny, Marc de Smedt...)
